Here are some of the takeaways from EarthFix reporter Aaron Kunz after his maiden Snake River voyage through Hells Canyon.

  • This stretch of the river is remote and features Class III to Class IV rapids; so unless you’re skilled and prepared for such a trip, you should utilize one of many guides to navigate these waters.

  • Boyd Norton suggests Hughes River Expedition, which has a long history on that river. Several other outfitters are also in the business.

  • Hughes and many other guides provide the necessary equipment needed, including tents, sleeping bags, waterproof cases, laundry bags etc.

  • Make sure to bring a camera.

  • There are very few mosquitoes in that portion of the Snake River.

  • Do not bring laptops, cells phones etc. It will ruin the experience, there is no cell service in the canyon.

  • Most trips range from three to five days.

  • The rafting season typically runs May through September.

  • Make sure to buy a fishing license before you go.
